| | Christmas Caroling Our youth group together with members of our choir travelled to four local personal care homes to share the spirit of the Christmas season with some of our older members who are no longer able to actively participate in the life of our parish community. The day was an uplifiting and emotional one as traditional Serbian Christmas carols filled the halls of: Kane Regional Center (George/Alona Evanovich, Mara Gasparovic), Locust Grove (Boja Kecman), Independence Court (Smilja Blagovich) and Golden Heights (Mimi Pavlovich). The youth group presented each senior with a gift, a memento from the National Youth Conference which they attended last summer at Seattle Pacific University in Seattle, WA. | New Icon Windows Consecrated; Parish Marks 110th Anniversary - 12/20/11 Five years of planning and fundraising for new stained glass icon-windows came to fruition on Sunday morning, October 30, 2011, with their blessing by His Grace the Rt. Rev. Dr. Mitrophan prior to the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy. His Grace read the prayers for the blessing of Icons, naming all of the saints represented on the beautiful windows, including: Protection of the Theotokos, St. Nikolai of ZIcha, Sts. Cosmas and Damian, St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, St. George the Great Martyr, Sts. Sava and Simeon, St. Lazar of Kosovo, and St. Petka (Paraskeva) of Serbia. Assisted by our own Proto Stevo Rocknage, he then proceeded to bless each individual window with holy water. The consecration of the windows marked the 110th anniversary of our St. Sava parish. From humble beginnings by Serbian and Russian immigrants who purchased a small wood frame Church in downtown McKeesport in 1901, the dedication and sacrifice of those early newcomers flourished through the decades to the growth of the current congregation. The church commissioned Conrad Schmitt Studios Inc. of Milwaukee, WI to design and install the windows. Meticulously designed and crafted, new stained glass windows are created by CSS artists and craftsmen in a variety of styles each year. In addition to their expertise in art glass, the studio has provided the decorative painting and restoration for some of the most beautiful churches, theatres hotels and civic spaces in the United States. Their excellent work is truly reflected in our own new windows. In addition to His Grace, the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy concelebrants included Proto Stevo and his son, Rev. Christopher Rocknage, pastor at Holy Resurrection of Christ parish in Lebanon, PA. They were assisted by Rev. Deacon Ned Trbovich. In a surprise to all at the Small Entrance of the Divine Liturgy, His Grace Bishop Mitrophan awarded the “Right of Wearing the Pectoral Cross” to Fr. Stevo. His Grace’s proclamation, read by Fr. Christopher states, “Through his zeal in the service of the Priesthood, and for his dedicated and fruitful pastoral work, for his enormous contribution and work with our youth, as well as for his great efforts and support of our Shadeland camp, be it known that Protopresbyter Stevan Rocknage is deserving of the recognition of our Holy Serbian Orthodox Church. Therefore, we award him with the Right of Wearing the Pectoral Cross, trusting that this highest award of the Serbian Orthodox Church shall inspire him to continue with even greater zeal for the well being of our Church in the United States and Canada.” Bishop Mitrophan gave a beautiful homily based on the raising of the widow of Nain’s son. He stressed the need to remember the sacrifices made by the generations s before us, and exhorted us to do the same, reminding us that the light and joy of Christ is celebrated in all Orthodox Churches and monasteries throughout the world. In this joy of Christ a large number of communicants received Holy Communion from His Grace during the Holy Liturgy. A festive dinner followed the services. After dinner remarks were given by Bishop Mitrophan, parish council president Steve Kracinovsky, and Proto Stevo Rocknage. Proto Stevo called upon Founders’ Circle sponsors of the St. Sava Window fund to come forward and be recognized. Founders’ Circle sponsors contributed $5,000 or more to the capital campaign. They included: Nick and Mitzi Pilipovich, George Pilipovich and Cathy Obradovich. Founders’ Circle sponsors who were not present at the banquet included: Dush and Jennifer Mrvos, Helen Tankosic, Dolores Hess and the Radakovich family. Two of our supporting organizations, the St. Sava Men’s club and Sisterhood were also Founders’ Circle sponsors. In another surprise to everyone, two citations of recognition (Episcopal Grammatas) were awarded by His Grace to Danica (Dee Dee) Baskot and James Brady. These awards are given by the Diocesan Bishop for outstanding service by a layperson in our Serbian Orthodox Church. Mrs. Baskot, who serves as parish council second vice president and as president of our Holy Trinity Kolo, was awarded the Grammata for her many good works in our parish and the Diocese. Mr. Brady, who serves as parish treasurer, received the Grammata for his work and dedication in chairing the window project and also for Parish Stewardship. All present honored these two worthy individuals with the singing of “Mnogaja Ljeta.” In concluding remarks, Proto Stevo told the crowd that a Bishop at a recent Pan-Orthodox Youth Council meeting stated, “Many people say ‘the youth are the future of the Church’. In fact, it is the other way around. The Church is the future of our youth.” As our Holy Orthodox Church continues to grow, our youth are expected to carry on the work of their parents and grandparents to preserve the Church for generations to come. < - For more photos please visit our photo archive page. |

What Does 9/11 Mean to You? - 09/11/11 A message from Very Rev. Stevan G. Rocknage on the tenth anniversary of September 11, 2001: What does 9/11 Mean to You? “There is no doubt that all of you remember exactly where you were, and what you were doing, when you heard of the plane attacks at the World Trade Center Towers. Since it was, and always has been (since the 4th century), the Feast of the Beheading of John the Baptist, I was upstairs in Church, preparing for the Divine Liturgy. Throughout that fateful day, as we all watched the horrors unfolding in New York, Washington and Shanksville, I was both saddened and uplifted, as I watched BOTH the lowest depths of man’s depravity and evil, as well as his ability to heroically rise up and serve those in need… That evening, we all cried and prayed together in Church as we offered up the Moleben service in Time of Hostilities, asking our Lord to comfort those who lost loved ones, and strengthen those who courageously were putting their lives at risk as “First-Responders.” That night, I remember how grateful I was for all who showed up in Church, just because we felt the need to be in God’s presence – it was humbling and gratifying to all who were there! Now, ten years have passed by – albeit too quickly – and it is time to take stock of what we have done with the feelings and instinctual desire to serve God by helping others that we all felt that night 10 years ago today – we all wanted to do something! If we are honest, we must note that the fervor and devotion “to do something for those in need” has quietly dissipated in many of us. How sad… The best testimony (witness) to the courage, bravery, and heroism we watched that day, as well as the best way to squash Evil’s attempt at overwhelming us is to emulate those who willingly went into those burning towers, Pentagon, and open field to help those in distress – NOW is the time for us to do the same! Let’s find ways to serve God by helping those in need – then we will then we will truly appreciate what took place on September 11, 2001!” |
We Remember - Tenth Anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001 - 09/11/11 We Remember Our Parish Community remembers those who died on September 11, 2011 in the violent and unprecedented terrorist attack on civilians on American soil. A special memorial service commemorating the tenth Anniversary of September 11 was held in our Church parking lot at 9:00 AM. Proto Stevo Rocknage led us in prayer for all of the victims and first-responders who died that day as well as their families. Prayers were also offered for the brave men and women of the U.S. Military who continue to fight the war on terrorism here and abroad. A special flag raising ceremony was held by parish members who are veterans of the armed forces. The flag raised today was presented to our parish by Proto Stevo and Protinica Joann’s son-in-law Captain Michael Repasky of the US Army who is currently stationed in the Arghandab River Valley in Afghanistan. It was flown over the Combat Out-Post Terra Nova on July 4, 2011. May we, both as Orthodox Christians and as American citizens, never forget the tragic events that unfolded that day in New York City, Washington, DC and in Shanksville, PA. May we pray without ceasing for the salvation of our Nation and the whole human race with the most powerful of prayers, “Lord, Have Mercy!”
+Grant rest eternal in blessed falling asleep, O Lord to all of the souls who departed this life on September 11, 2001 and make their Memory to be Eternal! For more pictures, please visit our Photo Archives page. |

Sunday of Orthodoxy 2011 - 03/11/11 The Sunday of Orthodoxy is the first Sunday of Great Lent. The dominant theme of this Sunday since 843 has been that of the victory of the icons. In that year the iconoclastic controversy, which had raged on and off since 726, was finally laid to rest, and icons and their veneration were restored on the first Sunday in Lent. Ever since, this Sunday has been commemorated as the "Triumph of Orthodoxy." In remembrance of this historic event in the life of the Church, the priest, preceded by the altar servers and the Holy Cross, leads the school children in a procession around the inside of the Church. Each child holds an icon. |

2009 National Youth Conference & Sabor Highlights - 08/15/09 Highlights of the 2009 National Youth Conference and National Church Sabor of the Serbian Orthodox Church in North and South America Canton, OH August 6 - 13th, 2009 The Youth conference was held at the beautiful Walsh University campus and was attended by 33 youth and 8 chaperones. Prota Stevo, as the National Director of Youth Ministry for our Church in North & South America, coordinated the 4 day events: a visit to an Orthodox Monastery, where the youth were annointed with Holy Oil from the Tomb of Christ in Jerusalem; the cleaning of a food-bank warehouse and packing lunches for the needy; special seminars hosted by distinguished speakers, including "our own" Ellis Cannon and Dr. Dave Medich, with a focus on the Conference Theme: "Know God - No Fear! No God - Know Fear!"; singing with the St. George choir for Divine Liturgy on Sunday; and a trip to the Akron Arrows minor-league baseball game. Each day also had sessions of group discussion with Fr. Stevo on issues facing our youth! The National Sabor this year was of historic significance because for the first time in nearly fifty years, the Serbian Orthodox Church in America had brethren from BOTH the Patriarchial Church and the former "Free Church" in attendance! Specifically in attendance were 224 people including" 1 Metropolitan, 5 Bishops, 90 Priests, 2 Deacons, 4 Monks, 1 Abbot, 9 Central Church Council members, 49 Parish Presidents, 55 Parish Delegates and 8 'Kolo Srpski Sestara' members. The Keynote Speaker for the Sabor was the Very Reverend Dr. Paul Tarazi, Professor Emeritus of the Old Testament at St. Vladimir's Orthodox Seminary (Crestwood, NY) who spoke on the Sabor Theme: "Christ the True Light - The Light of The Church and The Light of The World." The opening of the Sabor saw three diocesan finalists for the St. Nikolai of Zhicha Oratorical Festival give their presentations. The winners were: 1st place ($1000 award) to Katherine Pokranjak of the Midwest; 2nd place ($750 award) to Alex Berger of the West; and 3rd place ($500 award) to Ann Mirske of the East. The National Standing Committees for our Church in North and South America gave their reports to the representatives in attendance. The Committes are as follows: Stewardship, Youth Ministry (Fr. Stevo, presenter), Christian Education, Liturgical Music, Communications, Serbian Culture & Heritage, and Young Adult Ministry. Workshops were held on Tuesday and Wednesday evening. Prota Stevo served as a panelist for the Stewardship workshop and led the "Training Youth Leaders" workshop. From now on the Official See of the Serbian Orthodox Church in North and South America will be the St. Sava Monastery in Libertyville, IL, with the Metropolitan of that See as the President of the Episcopal Council. The minimum salary for a parish priest was raised from $1600/month to $2500/month, effective immediately. The Eastern Diocesan representatives for the Central Church Council are: Milan Visnic (Washington, DC), Eli Janyen (Johnstown, PA) and Bora (last name?) of New York, NY. The Sabor welcomed and gave assistance (via the Eastern Diocese) to the two parish priests from South America - who were overwhelmed with emotion at the reception they recieved. |
